Wait..Really..Me..NYU?

I have some super exciting news to share with you guys.. and a tiny question to ask which I will expand on at the end of the post!! So as you may know, I have toured a few colleges.. Uconn, Pace, and NYU. Well I did fall in love with NYU when I visited, but I tried to pull myself away because I thought I would never have the chance to get in...  I was Wrong!!

I got home from school on Friday and right in my email was an ACCEPTANCE letter to NYU Steinhardt! You do not understand how I felt when I saw those words... I literally froze and I was so overwhelmed that I became emotionless haha!  (I'm bad at dealing with emotions as you may already know lol) I told my mom who at first was conflicted, but later after speaking with her friends and seeing the financial aid which was decent, started pushing me towards going to NYU!! I literally cried when she told me that NYU could be considered. I honestly believe she is more excited than me! So now it's down to just Uconn and NYU. I feel so lucky to have two great choices to pick from but I really thought that the decision between these two schools would be easy. In reality though, I feel so terribly conflicted... (I'll explain this later at the end of the post if you care to share your opinions.. any advice you give would be so helpful to me because I'm straight down the middle and kinda freaking out haha)

Anyways let's move onto the outfit part of my post today!! I have been digging into my stash of items from Shabby Apple lately. I got some really cute items from the store and I really want to do a haul, but I have so much other things that I want to show you guys.. such as my haul from NY and possibly even some other big items that I got recently haha! (I'll keep that a secret for now!) Today I am wearing a cute stripped sweater!

Gold Striped Sweater

Gold Striped Sweater

I wanted to take picture outside today, but the weather would not cooperate.. it's raining as of now and I couldn't risk breaking my camera so inside I went haha! This sweater is very simple but so cute at the same time. I personally love the look of a comfy sweater like this one paired with leggings. It's a quick, but put together look for me that requires minimum effort! Recently, I have been in love with this pair of leggings.. I actually accidentally ordered two pairs of these a while back and I'm glad I did because they are so cozy! They are much thicker than regular leggings (so they are more jegging like) and they keep me quite warm!

Gold Striped Sweater

Short Sleeved Sweater

Even though the sweater was sold as a "sweater," I personally feel that the material used to make it isn't what I would consider a sweater haha. The sweater has two layers.. a thin white tank with a material on top. It resembled more of a shirt for me, but it's still cute nevertheless! The gold thread that they used for this sweater really caught my eye. It makes the sweater sparkle in the light and I feel that it even kinda has a holiday flair to it haha.

Short Sleeved Sweater

Fox Ring

John Bay's Women Boots

With a simple outfit like this, I tend to like to wear more jewelry. Today I have on two rings and a set of bangles. The cute little fox ring is one of my favorite but I sadly don't wear it as often as I want. I just love how detailed the fox is made to be and the crystals that they put on it. For my shoes, I wore a pair of boots that I just recently purchased when I went to the mall. I feel like I got these boots for a steal to be honest! They were just under $20 and the material is quite strong! Plus there is a tiny big of a heel which I like. It gives me extra height without the twisted ankle! =) (I just checked online and I did get the boots for a steal!! They are originally $69, but they are $40+ now on clearance!! Getting these for only ~$20 was a great deal!))

Sweater- Similar @ Nordstrom
Leggings- Aeropostale
Boots- JcPenny
Rings- Similar @ Forever 21 (Ring 1, Ring 2)
Bracelets- Wetseal

Do you like the sweater and leggings combo?
Have you gotten any steals before like with me and these boots?

Okay so feel free to chime in your opinion on my college situation if you wish... any opinion will help me out greatly! (I'll also try and keep it short haha)
In the beginning of my college choices, I was literally 100% against Uconn, but then after lots of thinking and talking, I realized that Uconn is a great school that I could potentially come out debt free from! I also had many friends there so I more or less forced myself to like the school... and now I LOVE it and I can see myself there quite happy.
On the other hand, NYU has been a dream school for me but I had to give up on my dream because for one I though I couldn't get in and 2nd I couldn't afford it. So when I got my acceptance letter, I was shocked and even more shocked when I got my financial aid and saw that it was a decent amount.

With the scholarship, NYU would be ~10K +expenses of being in NY more than Uconn each year... which is still a lot, but my college experience at NYU would be a lot better than Uconn (that is what I think.. it might not be true) I feel like at NYU, I'll be able to see a more diverse group of people and have the chance to meet people with higher status. I just need to justify that extra 10K per year somehow...

On the flip side, I did get into a really good program at Uconn which has quite a few perks such as picking classes early (which I heard could make a big impact) and Uconn isn't ranked that much lower than NYU. It's just the location that bothers me because my heart feels like it belongs in the city.. not in the middle of a farm haha.
Long story short, NYU is where I want to be, but would it be worth the risk? Uconn is the safe choice in everything- location, money, majors, classes, even friends... while NYU is a bunch of scary new things coming at me... I feel like though that I could grow a lot more at NYU..

**One more thing that I have to consider if my major.. I got into both schools for teaching (I know uconn has a great teaching program) , but I may switch it to undecided.. because I really don't know what I want to do... If I do go to NYU, I would definitely switch my major to something more risky.. basically something I can't get at Uconn.. so that it is worth while.
Yup, this is how my mind is working right now.. it's a mess and from my writing, you can tell I'm uterally confused and it hurts so badly. I had my life set up before this!!
NYU is amazing, but a huge risk with everything.. money, majors, life, friends, opportunities..
Uconn is safe and flexible...
They are both great schools especially with the program I got into at Uconn.. I feel that it is on par with NYU.. but the name of NYU is better and the location of NYU is so much better for me..
Yeah I'm going to stop now because I could go on forever, but you get the point haha. If you have any advice, feel free to share them!! I'm very grateful for any opinions I can get!  =) Thank you guys so much!!

  4. Oh Mindy, getting accepting into NYU is such a major achievement. If you don't take it, the chances are high that you will regret it later on. Seriously, NYU has an excellent reputation. In Europe, we have never heard of Uconn but of NYU for sure. And as I previously said, also think of all the connections that you will make, which will be important once you've finished your studies. This one is a no-brainer for me. Hope you will make the best choice for yourself.

    1. Hey Anouka! Yes, that is exactly how I feel and a major reason why I can't let NYU go (that and the independence I could gain from it) The connections are also so important and I do want to travel so NYU is perfect for that. I just wish I could figure out a way to deal with the cost!!

  9. Ultimately you will be all you decide, but my personal opinion is that UNCONN decide. Sometimes we want to adventure and risk, but college is a pretty big change. Sometimes classes are not as many people think and sometimes are no less enjoyable. 10K less a year is much better not only for you but for your parents, you must be regarded with them. Also peudes you think you would use that money. You have no real feel of all materials need to buy for your lessons. So my humble opinion go for Unconn.

    Beautiful top~

  13. First, congratulations on all of your acceptances! ♥ It's really exciting that you get to choose between two schools you love.
Ultimately, the decision is up to you and you should do what feels right, even if other people don't necessarily agree. It seems like you have a good grasp of the pros and cons for each school though!
I think the most important advice I could have given myself a year ago when I was deciding between colleges is that you choose your own happiness and have the power to make your college experience into what you want it to be, regardless if you choose UConn or NYU. Even though you might think of UConn as the "safe" choice now, there's nothing stopping you from taking a risk and starting a club at your school or taking classes towards a major you hadn't considered previously. Similarly, because of how different your new life at NYU will be, you might be hesitant to go out and do all the things that you planned on (at least at first). Both of these are perfectly okay! Just remember that your perceptions of whichever school you end up choosing will change when you finally do make your decision, go to orientation, and start classes. Approach this decision process with an open mind and open heart, and don't let your preconceived notions limit you too much.
Good luck with everything, and I know you'll have an amazing time at college next fall!

Wow, your advice is really helpful and the way you explained it to me does really make me reconsider what I originally felt about the schools. I did realize that going to NYU might scare me too much and cause me to be a hermit in my own room, but I never thought I could do something bold at Uconn too! hmm.. that is something that I actually really want to do!
I definitely will approach my decision with an open mind and I'll try to get rid of anything I felt about the school once I enter!

Thank you so much again!! I really appreciate it because you just gave me more hope in whatever I choose!

  14. In all honesty - and as a 36-year-old who has seen college in hindsight - I would have shelled out more for NYU. You only live once, and the opportunity to go to school in an exciting place as New York City will not come often. Also, in the city, you are open to more opportunities than otherwise. Many of them lead to career choices that will change your world. Anywho, the ultimate decision is up to you, but since you asked...I like your simple outfit, by the way. Love the boots.

    1. Hey!! Thank you for your comment!! It's interesting to hear your opinion on this as well since you've been through it!! I am leaning towards Uconn as of now (but who knows, my mind changes depending on the hour...) the regret or the "what if" part is really getting to me if I don't go to NYU. It is true.. you only live once and I kinda already have made regrets in the past of not doing something more adventurous!

  15. NYU! Woohoo. What do you plan to major in? Stein is the business school. Would you choose the same major at UConn? If you're really going into business then def choose NYU. Even though it's more expensive now, the job opportunities will be better (assuming you get good grades) in the future with the NYU name over UConn.

Yes, NYU's name really is better than Uconn .. I'm still lost on my majors. . haha I really thought I would have another 2 years to finalize my choice so I have a lot of thinking to do. Uconn honestly feels so much safer for a confused mind like mind lol, but man NYU's name is so much better!

Anyway, congratulation on being accepted to your dream school! :) I can somehow understand your dilemma on choosing which school to go to. When I graduated from high school last year I was faced with 3 schools to choose from and I wished I didn't have any choice at all so I wouldn't have to think and compare so many things like cost location and offered courses. Haha! But in the end I kind of just went with my gut feel and chose where I really knew I was gonna be happy and contented in. So far it's been good for me and I'm really glad I chose the school that I did :)

Bottom line is, choose whichever you think would be best for you! Choose the school that you know will not give you regrets in the end :) I'm sure your family and friends will support whatever choice you make! All the best to you! :D

Love the money you saved on those boots. It makes my thrifty heart so happy. And yes, I like to get clothes & such for cheap, too. (Oh, and those bangles look totally 'Summery')

You say ...Uconn is a great school that I could potentially come out debt free from!...
That's a good thing! You don't want to pay for the rest of your life, right!?

...at NYU, I'll be able to see a more diverse group of people and have the chance to meet people with higher status.
That's not really a good reason! You will meet plenty of diverse/higher-status/important people later in life. ;)

  41. First of all, congratulations on getting into NYU! I know that it is definitely one of the most difficult schools to get in and you got a scholarship for it, which is wonderful!

Going to college is a huge change, and while it might be "easier" to go to UCONN since you'll be in your comfort zone surrounded by your friends, it might be difficult to expand from that because, well, you're comfortable. It's also sometimes hard because your friends might change and you'll hang out with each other less than you do not, so I'm not sure if that's a good reason to go to a school. Sometimes it's better to go somewhere where you don't know anyone, because you're forced to meet new people and make new friends. Also, in the long run I think it's better for networking when it comes to work since NYU has such a diverse group of students. I'm not very familiar with UCONN though.

It's also really pricy to go to school with an undecided major, but I'm sure as long as you finish all of your general courses the first or second year and then decide on a major, it'll be okay.

I've read a story and heard a podcast on a situation like this. I'm actually not familiar with UCONN at all, so I can't say how it ranks, but if you go to NYU, you can be a small fish in a big pond or if you go to UCONN, you can be a big fish in a small pond. Let's say you go to NYU, you'll be surrounded by tons of peers who are just as smart as you, if not smarter. It'll be really difficult to keep up, but you might like the challenge and it might motivate you. It could also demotivate you and you might switch career options because you can't excel as much as you would like. Or if you go to UCONN, you might end up being top of the class. I think the book I read this in (with statistics and all) was called "David and Goliath" by Malcom Gladwell. It's in one of the chapters and I highly recommend reading it before making your decision.

Either way, you sound extremely bright and intelligent and I wish you success either way ^^

    1. Hey Mai!! A huge thank you to you for this thoughtful comment!!
Your right that Uconn is the "easier" , "safe" choice for me. It is tempting me to go there just because I don't have to try as hard, but I'm trying to push this out of my mind.
Going to NYU undecided is probably a really bad idea for me I'll admit.. I probably need to get things figured out a bit more if I choose to attend!

The big fish/small pond analogy is really interesting and it's definitely something that I have thought about. At uconn, I would be closer to the top (well in the top third probably.. college is so huge) while at NYU, I know I would struggle to even be in the top 50%
I'm not sure how I would react to being under all that pressure at NYU which is also scary. I can see myself rising to the challenge, but at the same time, I know too much pressure isn't good for me and that I do end up crumbling sometimes... I'm scared that the money /scholarship issue over at NYU would push me over the edge!
I'll definitely give that book a look right now after this comment!! It sounds pretty helpful!

Thank you so much again!!! =)
